The Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix Roebelenii) has become the one of the most popular palms in subtropical and tropical climates because of its beauty and low maintenance.

This lovely specimen prefers the moist, well-drained soils. If the soil becomes too compacted, mix it with sand, perlite or peat moss.  

The Pygmy Date Palm thrives in full sun or partial shade. If you grow Phoenix Roebelenii inside, find the brightest spot in your house. In spring and summer place it outside to get natural light.

This small specimen needs ample water. Water it more in hot months and less in winter. Occasionaly it can withstand floodings.

The tropical landscaping item can tolerate temperatures down to 20 F and lower for short periods with no damage.

Proper fertilization is very important for the health of Pygmy Date Palm. Micronutrient deficiencies are common problems for these trees. These palms require magnesium and potassium to grow well. Potassium deficiencies can be fatal to these palms. For the best growth and health of this beatiful ornamental, use a fertilizer with potasium and magnesium sulfate monthly during the growing season. Don’t overfeed them, the leaves may turn brown.

The elegant Phoenix Roebelenii is prone to leaf spot and bud rot.

The crown requires occasional pruning of dead and browned older leaves. When pruning be careful since the lower leaflets have very sharp thorn.
